Hot rolled bars (raw bars) supplied by steel mills are covered with rust. They are not straight, round or smooth. Quality Bar's process converts these rust covered bars into Turned, Ground and Polished (TG&P) bars which are very straight, round, and silver-colored with a mirror-type finish.
Quality Bar has two (2) automated production lines. One line is for bars from 3/4" to 3" in diameter and and the other line is for bars from 3" to 8" in diameter.
The first step in the production process is to place the 10,000 lbs. bundles of hot rolled bars on a long entry table which feeds the bundles to a star wheel machine where they are de-bundled. The bars are fed one at a time into the #1 Straightener where rust is partially removed and the bars are pre-straightened. The bars are then transferred by roll tables to the peeler.
The peeling process gives the bar a barber-pole appearance. The more the peeler overlaps or "wraps", the less the barber pole effect. There is a trade off, the more the wraps the greater the production times and the higher the cost
The pressure exerted during peeling, bends the bar requiring post-straightening which takes place in the #2 Straightener. The ultimate quality of the TG&P bar is the result of the #2 Straightener.
If only T&P is ordered, after the post straightening the bars are inspected, weighed and prepared for shipment. Quality Bar will either paper wrap the finished bundle or place each bar into a protective cardboard tube. The bars are gathered into either approximately 2,000 or 4,000 pound finished bundles depending on the customer's preference. The banded bundles are then moved into storage where they remain until shipment.
If the bars are sold as T G & P they are transferred to the Grinder, after which they are inspected, weighed and prepared for shipment.
